Manchester City target Brazilian starlet as option to improve left-back area
According to The Telegraph, Athletico Paranaense left-back Abner Vinicius has emerged as a player of interest to Manchester City.
Manchester City undoubtedly have one of the best squads around Europe. There are only a couple of areas of the Cityzens’ richly-assembled squad that can be deemed weak.
One of those is the left-back position, with Pep Guardiola seeing his options weaken in recent months due to the absence of Benjamin Mendy. At the moment, Guardiola has Joao Cancelo and Oleksandr Zinchenko as options at left-back. Nathan Ake and Aymeric Laporte have operated in that position earlier, so they could provide cover to the Spaniard’s side when required.
Cancelo has shown in the last two seasons at Manchester City that he is equally adept at playing on either side of the defence. Zinchenko has been an able deputy to Cancelo this season but for a club of City’s stature, Guardiola seems to want two first-rate options for the left-back position.
As per The Telegraph, Manchester City will aim to strengthen the left-back unit during the summer transfer window and are eyeing a move for Athletico Paranaense starlet, Abner Vinicius.
Despite being relatively young, Abner Vinicius, 21, is vastly experienced having made 99 senior appearances in his burgeoning career so far.
For Athletico Paranaense, he has registered three goals and 10 assists in 90 appearances and was part of his club’s Copa Sudamericana triumph last year. Also, the youngster won Olympic Gold with Brazil at the Tokyo Olympics, thereby, catching the eye of the Man City’s scouts in South America, the report adds.
Vinicius is a talented young player who has a big future ahead of him. The young Brazilian’s performances in South America haven’t gone unnoticed, with Manchester City adding him to their left-back shortlist ahead of the summer transfer window.
