Manchester City keeping tabs on Arsenal’s summer recruit
Defending Premier League champions Manchester City have watched Arsenal left-back Nuno Tavares on several occasions this season, reports ESPN.
Nuno Tavares, 21, has impressed with a series of exciting displays in his debut Premier League season following an £8million summer from Benfica. The Portuguese has adapted to the demands of English football like a duck to water and has become first-choice left-back ahead of Kieran Tierney under Mikel Arteta.
Manchester City have scouted Nuno Tavares as part of their hunt for a potential new addition to left-back, although ESPN claims a bid for Arsenal’s high-flying left-back in January seems unlikely at this moment in time. The Cityzens are likely to wait until the summer to make any formal offer for the young Portuguese defender.
It has lately become apparent that Pep Guardiola’s Sky Blues are on the lookout for a new left-back. Joao Cancelo, signed originally from Juventus in 2019 as a cover for right-back Kyle Walker, has established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet this term with consistent, eye-catching displays at left-back. He has made the left-back spot his own, registering two goals and six assists in 22 outings already.
Although a midfielder by trade, Oleksandr Zinchenko has been used at left-back by Guardiola. But as Zinchenko is linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium in recent weeks and Benjamin Mendy has been suspended by the club, there’s room in the squad for a new left-back.
Nuno Tavares has made an instant impact at the Emirates Stadium, featuring in more Premier League games than Tierney so far. He has enough signs of being a competent player in the English top-flight, someone who could develop with age, maturity and top-level coaching.
The Portuguese under-21 international is contracted at Arsenal until 2025 with the option of a further year. The Gunners would loathe losing the 21-year-old next year, particularly to one of their Premier League rivals.
For now, Guardiola and Man City must continue monitoring Tavares under Arteta.
