Manchester City among European clubs watching Atalanta star
According to reports from Italian news outlet Calciomercato, Manchester City are among a host of European clubs interested in signing Atalanta left wing-back Robin Gosens.
Robin Gosens, 27, impressed for Atalanta last season, contributing 11 goals and six assists in 32 Serie A games. He was also a part of the German squad that reached Euro 2020’s Round of 16. Back with Atalanta, the wing-back has started the new Serie A campaign well.
The German international’s stock has risen in the last two years, with Manchester City, not the only club credited with an interest. The likes of Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, and Leicester City have also scouted Gosens, Calciomercato reports.
Atalanta are keen to hold on to Gosens and have already triggered the clause for the renewal of his contract until 2024. Any club willing to pay above €30million next summer could change the Bergamo-based club’s mind, the report adds.
The left-back position has been problematic for Manchester City for some years now and Pep Guardiola should look for a permanent solution in 2022. When Benjamin Mendy was signed from AS Monaco in 2017, it was hoped that the Frenchman would solve City’s problems at left-back. However, that hasn’t been the case, with injuries and fitness problems holding Mendy back from fulfilling his potential. Currently, he remains suspended for legal matters.
Joao Cancelo and Oleksandr Zinchenko have done a good job at left-back when required. Nonetheless, for City to dominate English football and win the elusive Champions League, a proven, experienced left-back is the need of the hour. To that end, Robin Gosens would fit the bill perfectly at the Etihad Stadium due to his versatility.
Gosens has majorly operated as a left wing-back or in left midfield under Gian Piero Gasperini at Atalanta but he’s more than capable of playing at left-back. A mix of physical and technical qualities, the German international would thrive in Guardiola’s system at Manchester City.
And for a price exceeding €30million, Gosens would represent a snip for the Cityzens but they’ll have to fight off a host of European clubs for his signature next year.
