Manchester City are at the top of the Premier League title race, after a crucial 2-1 win against Arsenal and a 1-0 result against Burnley.
Going into the latest PL match weekend, City had a massive opportunity to further close the gap between themselves and Arsenal. A 3-0 victory for the Cityzens and a 2-1 defeat for the Gunners the week before saw Man City boosted, giving their meeting with Arsenal an added layer of importance.
A tight game, but Kai Havertz’s effort wasn’t enough as Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland made sure Manchester City gained the three points. This 2-1 result meant the Arsenal were on 70 points and City on 67.
Then a midweek fixture saw Manchester City come out with a 1-0 victory from their encounter with Burnley, who have now been relegated due to this. So, the leaders have become Man City, though they share equal points, goals scored set them apart.
This sets up an astonishing end to the campaign.
There are only a few matches remaining in the Premier League before a winner is decided.
If both sides win all these encounters, they’d end with 85 points each. The winner would then be chosen by goal difference, which is equally key. Currently, that element is also on the same number, but the difference in goals being scored is what pulls Arsenal away from their spot.
This would be quite something if City pulled this off. After months of seemingly having to bid goodbye to their league chances, they are now well and truly in the run.
They have already claimed a title this term, after they defeated Arsenal in the Carabao Cup. They remain in the FA Cup, where they have a semi-final against Southampton coming up. And, the PL is still going. They have the possibility to secure three honours in the next month or so.
For their rivals, they have already missed out on the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. But, they are still in with a chance for the Premier League. They will also be playing in the UEFA Champions League in a semi-final task with Atletico Madrid, where they aim to book themselves into the final against either Bayern or Paris Saint-Germain.
The achievements will require their best level of display, as everything now will be decisive.
The final Premier League fixtures
Man City fixtures | Arsenal fixtures |
|---|---|
Everton | Newcastle |
Brentford | Fulham |
Bournemouth | West Ham |
Crystal Palace | Burnley |
Aston Villa | Crystal Palace |
While having the likes of Villa and Palace, they still would be considered to have a very winnable fixture schedule.
Arsenal also have Crystal Palace, along with Newcastle, two tough opponents, but like City, they should be capable of getting the needed points out of these matches. But recent form has proved otherwise for them, which will be something they look to fix.
It’s an extraordinary end to the Premier League season, and the question that surrounds Manchester City and Arsenal will be answered soon.
