Manchester City suffered a 3-1 second-leg loss to Real Madrid, eliminating them from this season's UEFA Champions League.

After a tough campaign in the newly-revamped League Phase, Manchester City ended their eight matches on 22nd spot; meaning they would need to undergo a playoff in order to qualify for the last round of 16.

They were then drawn against defending champions Real Madrid, who also were unable to attain a top-eight place. A fixture that was set to take place for the fourth season in a row would see one of the pre-season favorites out of the competition in an early exit.

The first leg saw Manchester City battle Real Madrid until the final whistle, the match ending 3-2 for the Spanish side after a late comeback to being 2-1 down up till the 86th minute.

The second was a huge task for the Cityzens, who needed to turn the tie around. However, due to a Kylian Mbappe hattrick and despite a Nico Gonzalez goal, Manchester City were not able to surpass Madrid and lost the second leg 3-1 (6-3 on aggregate).

Their participation in the UCL is now over, leaving before the round of 16 had even begun.

When the season had started, many would have expected Manchester City to be big contenders for the title. However, as the season played out, their dismissal from Europe doesn't come as much of a shock as we've seen multiple poor results in various competitions this season.

Manchester City's aim will be to secure a top-four place in the Premier League, which would guarantee them Champions League football next season, where they'll hope they can display a better outcome than this time around.

They are still in contention for a trophy, as they continue in the FA Cup and will next meet Plymouth Argyle.

Pep Guardiola after the disappointing result

"The best team won, they deserved it. We made good Champions League campaigns before, semi-finals and finals but this season no."

"I had the feeling in the previous three (years) we were better than them, this time they have been better."

"They deserve it. We need to learn from it, we need to accept and move forward. With time, the team and the club will accept what it is."

"Now we have 13 Premier League games and we will try to be here next year. We have been unbelievable and we have to try, step-by-step, to get better."
