The UEFA Champions League returned this week, where on matchday one, 36 clubs begin their quest for European glory.

The Champions League is underway, and matchday one has officially been completed.

Thursday held the last few games of the matchday, as a special one-off element.

The league phase, which consists of eight matchdays, has the aim for every side to end within the top eight to automatically qualify or claim a place from ninth to 24th, and then go through an extra round, and then join the already qualified eight.

Among the matches we saw on Tuesday and Wednesday, there were wins for Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid. And, there were some shocks as Benfica were defeated by Qarabag and as were PSV by Union SG. While Juventus and Dortmund saw a draw when they encountered.

In the last instalment of matchday one, there were a further six matches to go underway, including Manchester City’s meeting with Napoli, Newcastle vs Barcelona, and Galatasaray taking on Frankfurt.

The second matchday will begin on the 30th of September, only a few weeks from now, where there will be more unmissable games such as Galatasaray vs Liverpool, Qarabag vs Copenhagen, and also Barcelona vs Paris Saint-Germain.

Let’s take a look at what results happened to conclude the first matchday.

Champions League Thursday’s results

Copenhagen 2-2 Leverkusen

Club Brugge 4-1 Monaco

Frankfurt 5-1 Galatasaray

Newcastle 1-2 Barcelona

Manchester City 2-0 Napoli

Sporting 4-1 Kairat

Some big results achieved. Club Brugge’s dominant display against Monaco, Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Napoli, and Frankfurt’s 5-1 victory against Galatasaray were some of the standouts.

And that brings the first matchday of the Champions League to a close, getting the contest up and running with an impressive first batch of matches.
