There is growing uncertainty about the future of Spanish coach Pep Guardiola at the helm of Manchester City, as his contract is set to expire in the summer of 2025, and he has yet to take any steps toward renewing it.

The situation regarding Pep's future with the "Citizens" has become increasingly unclear, especially after recent comments in which he admitted that he hasn't made any decisions yet about his future with the English team, hinting that anything is possible.

Alonso and Amorim among candidates to replace Guardiola at Man City

According to the Spanish newspaper "Defensa Central," Xabi Alonso, the current coach of Bayer Leverkusen, is being considered as a potential successor to Guardiola at Manchester City. Alonso has gained attention after a successful season with Leverkusen, winning both the league and cup in Germany, as well as the German Super Cup at the start of this season.

At 42, Alonso is also seen as a top candidate to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, with Ancelotti's contract expiring in the summer of 2026. However, Manchester City is eager to compete with Real Madrid to secure Alonso’s services if Guardiola does not renew his contract with the "Citizens."

Another name being mentioned in the Manchester City camp is that of Ruben Amorim, the 39-year-old coach of Sporting Lisbon. Amorim was previously linked to Liverpool, but now his name is being floated as a potential replacement for Pep.

Amorim's chances of landing the Manchester City job could be boosted by the arrival of his fellow countryman Hugo Viana as the club's new sporting director, replacing the Spaniard Txiki Begiristain, who has announced his decision to leave after joining the club back in October 2012.

The possibility of Alonso or Amorim joining Manchester City remains open, unless Guardiola decides to extend his stay with the club. Pep's journey with City, which began in 2016, has been marked by tremendous success both domestically and internationally.

Guardiola has led Manchester City to multiple trophies, including the English Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League in the 2022-2023 season. In total, he has won 18 titles with the club so far.
