Manchester City have been knocked out of the FIFA Club World Cup after they were unable to surpass Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal.

Manchester City's journey in the Club World Cup came to an end after they failed to get the job done against Al Hilal, in a match that went all the way to extra time to find a winner.

The Sky Blues got off to the ideal start when Bernardo Silva got them 1-0 ahead. The first half remained with the Premier League side having a one-goal advantage, but the first minute of the next 45 saw Marcos Leonardo make the scoreline 1-1.

In the 52nd minute, it was Al Hilal who went in front for the first time during the course of the match.

But the stress didn't last too long for Manchester City as Erling Haaland equalised some moments later.

The score remained a 2-2 draw and required an extra 30 minutes to determine the winner of the intense fixture.

Al Hilal went 3-2 ahead just a few minutes into the extra time, leaving Manchester City with a lot of worries.

The game was back level at 3-3, with both clubs needing to find that winning goal that would seal the deal for them.

Leonardo stepped up once again and was the match-winner for Al Hilal. A 4-3 victory for the Saudi Arabian side keeps them in the tournament, while Manchester City exit.

A prediction that many wouldn't have had, especially since the display Manchester City gave in all three of their group matches, which included a 5-2 win over Juventus.

Unfortunately for the Cityzens who expressed their desire to battle for this world title, they were unable to overcome their opposition. The positive that they will take away from this will be their stronger performances, which they showcased in the competition, but will need to work towards building themselves up.

Pep Guardiola's reaction to the loss

"I had a feeling we could go through. It's a pity, we were in such a good place, and I cannot say thank you enough to the staff, how they train and prepare, they have given everything."

"I have the feeling that the team is doing well, but we go home and now it's time to rest and refresh our mind and come back."

"I felt we were happy here and the sessions were really good but the levels here are so high."

"Now it is tough but we come back in the next days, rest and start."
