Why did Savinho choose this particular number to be his Man City number?

Manchester City have officially announced their first new signing of the summer, Savinho who joins the club on a five-year contract.

The 20-year-old Brazilian player arrives from Troyes but spent the previous season on loan with La Liga side Girona, who had a fantastic season after qualifying for the Champions League. Savinho ended his time at Girona with 41 appearances, 11 goals and 10 assists to his name.

Savinho has now linked himself with the current Premier League champions, becoming a new feature in the squad for the upcoming season, and he will aim to make a name for himself within this talented Manchester City squad - whose biggest goal for the 24/25 season will be claiming their fifth-in-a-row Premier League title, just creating some more history for the fun of it.

Savinho's excitement about joining Manchester City was apparent as he said, "I am very happy, I still can't believe I'm here, but with time, it will sink in."

The deal that Savinho has signed would keep him attached to Manchester City until the summer of 2029, making it a total of five possible seasons that he would remain a Cityzen.

After the news about the latest transfer was announced by the club, Savinho spoke about his awaiting journey with Manchester City - discussing things from his playing style to why he chose the number 26.

"My playing style is that of a Brazilian who likes to take on opponents, to be joyful, play joyful football with one-one-ones, providing assits, defending too and anything I can to help the team."

"My main characteristic, which I like most, is taking on opponents, being happy and getting the crowd on their feet."

When asked about this favourite position, he answered "I really like playing on the left and right, but I can also play in the middle. I really prefer to play on the right wing, but whatever the boss decides, I will help the team."

The Brazilian will be wearing the number 26 shirt come next season, and Savino explained his reason for choosing that exact number; a reason that might delight Man City supporters - Riyad Mahrez.

"My friends always said that I looked a bit like him, but Mahrez is Mahrez, Savio is Savio. I don't want to create expectations for people, but I want to show my football - but I really like Mahrez and the way he plays football. In this case, he is an inspiration here, that's why I chose his number, and I am happy."
