Manchester City won the Community Shield against Manchester United on Saturday afternoon, August 10, in a penalty shootout, winning 7-6 after a 1-1 draw in regular time. This victory marked a strong start for the Sky Blues in the 2024-2025 season.

The match, held at Wembley Stadium in London, drew a large crowd of around 85,000 fans. Australian international referee Jarred Gavan Gillett officiated the game.

Manchester City entered the match as the Premier League champions, while Manchester United participated as the FA Cup holders.

Despite several missed opportunities from both teams and a goal disallowed for United's Bruno Fernandes due to offside early in the second half, young Argentine Alejandro Garnacho eventually gave Manchester United the lead in the 82nd minute.

In the final minutes, Manchester City launched continuous attacks, leading to an equalizer from Portuguese international Bernardo Silva, who scored a perfect header after receiving a key pass from young Norwegian teammate Oscar Bobb.

With the match ending 1-1 in regular time, the two teams went directly to a penalty shootout.

Manchester City triumphed in the shootout, winning 7-6. Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans missed their penalties for Manchester United, while Bernardo Silva missed City's first penalty, but his teammates successfully converted the remaining kicks.

This victory denied Manchester United their first Community Shield title since 2016. It was the third consecutive time the two teams met in the Community Shield final, with Manchester United having won in 1956 and 2011.

As a result, Manchester City moved up to fifth place on the list of clubs with the most English Community Shield titles, with seven trophies, tying with Tottenham Hotspur. Meanwhile, Manchester United remains far ahead with 21 titles.
