Phil Foden is enduring a difficult season at Manchester City. However, his two assists last night against Crystal Palace move him closer to a Sergio Aguero statistic.
After the game, the stats company, Squawka, posted on X: "Five Man City players have been directly involved in 100+ Premier League goals under Pep Guardiola:
â—Ž 174 - Kevin De Bruyne
â—Ž 135 - Erling Haaland
â—Ž 125 - Raheem Sterling
â—Ž 103 - Sergio Aguero
â—‰ 101 - Phil Foden
"Welcome to the club, Phil Foden."
It is impressive that Foden is so close to Aguero's record. However, it must be stated that Aguero was at City for five years prior to Guardiola being appointed their manager. In total, Aguero had 325 goal involvements for City.
Foden has played his entire club career under Guardiola. There were calls for him to go on loan during his early days at the club when he was not playing. He was linked with multiple clubs but ended up staying at City and developing into one of the top midfielders in the division.
Will Phil Foden go on to break Kevin De Bruyne's record?
The player would have been frustrated by how this season has gone. Foden has often been used as a substitute. He was also left on the bench in both legs of their Champions League last 16 tie with Real Madrid, which City lost. He also made a very late cameo appearance in the EFL Cup final victory over Arsenal.
Despite this, Foden has still managed 10 goals with seven assists in 48 games in all competitions this season. However, this is a long way from the numbers he has managed in previous campaigns.
Due to his lack of game time, Foden has been linked with moves to Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid. If he were to move, then he would of course not be able to break De Bruyne's record of goal involvements under Guardiola.
Also, even if Foden stays at City, it will be very difficult for him to match De Bruyne's record. There has been speculation that this could be Guardiola's final season at City. However, if City are to miss out on winning the Premier League title to Arsenal, then he could stay for at least another campaign to try and ensure that he goes out on a high.
As Foden is only two goal involvements behind Aguero, he could overtake the legendary Argentine by the end of the season. City still have to play the FA Cup final against Chelsea, then AFC Bournemouth and Aston Villa in the league to round off their campaign.
