Pep Guardiola is to leave Manchester City at the end of the season. His replacement is expected to be Enzo Maresca, and he will need to find a replacement for Bernardo Silva as a priority.
It will feel like the end of an era with Guardiola, Silva, and John Stones departing this summer after all the success they have had at the Etihad Stadium over the years.
Maresca is a smart appointment as he has worked as City's Under-23s manager, and was also Guardiola's assistant for 61 matches. He then went on to win the Championship as the boss at Leicester City. Maresca then won the Club World Cup and the Europa Conference League with Chelsea.
It is always difficult to replace a legendary manager, as David Moyes found out when replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. Unai Emery also could not replicate the success and longevity of Arsene Wenger at Arsenal. Maresca feels a good fit, but only time will tell if he will be a success or not.
Silva's departure will also be a huge miss for City. He has been the club captain and a versatile attacking midfielder who has filled in at more central roles as well as on the right wing this season.
Who could Enzo Maresca replace Bernardo Silva with?
Possible replacements for Silva include Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez. Maresca worked with Fernandez at Chelsea, so signing him would make sense. However, his attitude does not always appear great. This season, he spoke of how much he liked the idea of playing for Real Madrid. City could face competition from Los Blancos for his services this summer.
Anderson has shone for Forest this season, scoring four goals with four assists in 37 Premier League games. Fernandez's stats are better, with 9 goals and 3 assists in 34 league games. However, he is a part of a much more talented roster.
The Forest player has shown great bravery this season as he continued to shine despite the loss of his mother. Anderson has been a key player for Forest as they have now comfortably survived in the Premier League. He is an England international who is expected to be a part of Thomas Tuchel's squad for the World Cup.
Anderson began his career at Newcastle United but was sold to Forest due to profitability and sustainability regulations. Newcastle is a big club, but City is the most successful club in England over the last decade. The midfielder would relish the chance to play in a side expected to win trophies.
