Paul Scholes is a Manchester United legend, of course. He was a great player, but as he recently called himself, he is also a bit of a "greedy b******." He wants Man U to be awarded the title that Manchester City won, presumably, for the 2011/12 season.
The issue, of course, stems from Man City recently being found guilty of financial fair play charges and not helping with the investigation into them. No punishment has yet been handed down, but one potential sanction would be for City to be stripped of the titles it won between 2009 and 2018, the years when the wrongdoing allegedly took place.
Scholes disagreed with Wayne Rooney's opinion that Man U shouldn't get the title for that season, as Scholes wrote on Instagram, "Keep hearing ex-teammates saying they want trophies taking (sic) off them but they don’t want their medals...f*** that I’m a greedy b****** I want my medal."
Paul Scholes should blame Manchester United for not getting past Manchester City in 2011/12
The truth is that Rooney is correct. Man United didn't deserve to win the title, and that was because they lost twice to Man City. Otherwise, the clubs tied with 89 points. Those two games between them saw United score one goal. City had seven, including a 6-1 victory in the first meeting.
While one can feel that City's ownership and executives broke the rules and the club deserves to be punished for that, the truth is that matches are won or lost on the pitch. United literally couldn't beat City in 2011/12. That's not an opinion, but a fact.
Scholes obviously has every right to believe strongly that the team he played for should be the champions, and maybe City was able to build a club of high-end talent faster than they should have because of breaking financial rules. That might not be the case, though City has been found guilty, and the club is appealing.
No matter if City acquired players, they might not have been able to otherwise; it was those players who defeated United's players, not the owners beating the owners. Sorry, Paul Scholes: Your club just didn't earn it that year, baby.
Manchester United hasn't won the Premier League since 2012/13, Scholes final season (he only played in 16 matches). That isn't Manchester City's fault, but United's poor decisions. Since 2013/14, Man U has finished second only twice and fifth or worse seven times. United should have been better and can only blame themselves for not being so.
