Manchester City have announced the exit of Gareth Taylor, after a five-year stint with the Women's Super League club.
Manchester City and Gareth Taylor have officially parted ways during the last few days after the club's 2-0 win over Aston Villa in the FA Cup on the weekend.
The run of results in the WSL this season has seen them once again miss out on the title, but unlike last year, they have been nowhere near in contention to win and are struggling to get into the top three. This could have played the biggest factor in the club's decision.
However, despite their league woes, Manchester City still are included in three cup competitions: they have an upcoming final against Chelsea in the FA League Cup, they have just qualified for the semi-final of the FA Cup and are also preparing for a clash with Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League.
A sacking for Taylor wouldn't have been predicted since there are only two months of the season remaining, especially when he has gotten the team deep into these competitions. But, the choice could come down to ensuring City can end the season with a top three place and a trophy in their midst and we have seen multiple times this season that the Sky Blues do fail to be consistent.
From losing to Arsenal 4-3 in the WSL to beating them 2-1 in the League Cup only three days later is a perfect example of how Man City's display this season has been, you just never know which version will turn up.
The Englishman has brought glory to the Cityzens after winning the FA Cup in 2020 and the League Cup back in 2022, two trophies during his tenure.
Club statement
In a statement released by the club, the managing director of Manchester City said, "Manchester City prides itself on competing at the top of the WSL and on its outstanding record of qualifying for European competition. Unfortunately, results this season have so far not reached this high standard. With six games of the WSL campaign remaining, we believe that a change of management will breathe fresh life into our bid to ensure qualification for the 25/26 UEFA Women's Champions League."
"We would like to place on record our thanks to Gareth for all of his efforts during his many years at City. Our FA Cup and League Cup triumphs will remain special moments in the history of this football club. We wish him all the best for the future."
Manchester City have also announced that Nick Cushing will be taking over managing duties for the club for the rest of this season.
A huge lead-up to the season will be occurring for Man City, who have many aims in their minds. Will this change of Gareth Taylor benefit them or put a dent in their targets?
