Manchester City can’t be beat. They’ve started the season with a perfect record of seven wins, no losses or ties, and manager Enzo Maresca has made history in doing so.
Maresca became the first manager in Premier League history to win each of his first seven league games with a new club.
The previous record was six consecutive wins, held by Carlo Ancelotti, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and Pep Guardiola. So yes, in terms of record, Maresca is not only off to a better start than Guardiola when he took over City, but he’s off to the best start with a new club in the league's history.
When Guardiola left, the pressure was on the club and its new manager to continue the high standard that was left behind. Man City always wanted Maresca to take over when Guardiola left and never gave it a second thought, he’s proving them right.
Guardiola built something special at Man City and when Maresca came there was some worry as he let go of multiple players that his predecessor brought in and had a lot of success with. Maresca wanted this to be his squad and had a massive summer in sales and new signings, which included the club breaking their transfer record twice in the same window to revamp the midfield.
It didn’t help that the Maresca era got off to a slow start, being dominated by Arsenal in a 3-0 FA Community Shield loss, and following that performance up with a shaky 2-1 win against Bournemouth in the first game of the Premier League Season.
But Man City have caught fire under Maresca, leading the Premier League with 21 points, they’re second in goal differential to only Brighton, who have had a historic start to the season, and they have only one loss to PSG in all of their competitions so far this season.
Manchester City show no signs of slowing down either, with favorable match ups in their next two games before they take on Brighton in back-to-back matches across two competitions which will both be massive games.
The first meeting of the two will be in the Carabao Cup, where Brighton knocked out Manchester United in an incredible comeback before they meet in Premier League action with both sides sitting in the top three to start the season. It will be very interesting to see how Maresca approaches these two matches in terms of squad rotation and which match will take more priority.
Maresca looks to build on his record-breaking start with a UCL match against AEK before taking on Aston Villa in the Premier League.
