Manchester City’s women, just a few days after triumphing in the Women’s Super League, where they claimed the title for this season, have now confirmed their placement in the FA Cup final after a massive encounter against Chelsea, where they won 3-2.
Manchester City will be ending their campaign with an appearance in the FA Cup final, giving them an opportunity to bid for a second honour on May 30th.
Last week, after Arsenal drew in their WSL game, this meant the title was confirmed for Man City. And after a spectacular league season, the trophy is theirs. Though they still have a match left, where they’ll meet West ham on the final day of the season, this will only be a formality.
However, they now have an FA Cup final to look ahead to, where their opponents will be Brighton, who advanced after a comeback against Liverpool in a 3-2 result.
For Manchester City, they went into their semi-final with a number of three prior games with Chelsea. Two of them had been won by Chelsea, but the latest one by City.
This made it very equal in terms of probability. Both sides were aiming to make it closer to achieving their second trophy of the season, for City adding it alongside the WSL, but for Chelsea, in addition to their League Cup.
And it was Chelsea who seemed like the likely team to go through as they took an early lead and then doubled it in the second half. By the 86th minute, it remained 2-0 for the Blues.
Mary Fowler got her goal to make it 2-1 and give the Cityzens a lifeline. In the 90th minute, City were giving it everything to level the scoreline, and Khadija Bunny Shaw was successful in doing so, as they found the goal to make it 2-2.
Extra time was required, much to the delight of Manchester City and the annoyance of their rivals. It was set to be a crucial half an hour, with City having a slight edge after their confidence was boosted.
And it was Shaw who put her side ahead, 3-2, and that was the effort that claimed an astonishing comeback for Manchester City that sent them to the final.
They will now be ending their already-impressive season off with an occasion that could see them become victorious in the FA Cup, proving they are now a team that can achieve anything they attempt to. But it will be an arduous task, as Brighton have shown their abilities to make it this far. Both sides have already met one another twice, the first ending in a 2-1 result for Man City, but the other coming recently, which was a 3-2 scoreline for Brighton.
With only a few weeks left now until the curtain is closed for this season, we look to see if Manchester City can add another moment of glory to their campaign.
