Manchester City have crashed out of this season's UEFA Women's Champions League after a 3-0 loss to Chelsea despite going into the match 2-0 up.

Manchester City took on their fellow Women's Super League side Chelsea in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, meeting them in a two-legged tie to decide who would remain in the competition.

The first leg saw a shocking 2-0 victory for the Sky Blues as Vivianne Miedema's brace secured a crucial advantage for City to take into the return fixture.

All City needed was a draw to book their place in the next round and knock out Chelsea, however, the second installment saw the losing side complete a massive comeback to leave Man City speechless.

Three first-half goals for the Blues were enough to turn the scoreline around in their favour, putting them ahead not only on the night but also 3-2 on aggregate.

Disappointingly for Manchester City, they have been eliminated from the competition despite their impressive display in the first leg of this tie. Chelsea move into the final four alongside Arsenal, Barcelona and Lyon to complete this season's semi-final lineup.

For the Cityzens, this loss comes as their third opportunity of silverware missed out on: in the WSL, they've failed to keep up in the challenge for the title, and now only focus on finishing in the top three and recently in the FA League Cup final, they were defeated by Chelsea.

There now remains one chance at a trophy and that comes in the FA Cup. Manchester City will be meeting Manchester United in the semi-final of that competition, while Chelsea take on Liverpool.

Nick Cushing after the loss

"We have to take the confidence and the positives that we've run this team very close and given them many problems. But also, we've got to look at where we can improve and so that when we return to this competition at this stage, we can be the team who progresses."

"I believe this club should be and will be fighting for trophies, whether it's in the Champions League, the League Cup or the other two cup competitions."

"We'll continue to do that. We know that we have to play for now, there's an FA Cup final, with a semi against United coming up, and to fight for the Champions League places, where chasing down United and Arsenal."

"The clarity of what we need to do is there, we have to find the solutions now to be competitive in those games. It's the ultimate test. It's difficult to say where we're at, but I'm so proud."
