Man City in September: Month Preview

Man City are preparing for a busy September which features five games across three competitions. We start the month at home to newly promoted Coventry City in the EPL, followed by a trip to Portugal to face Porto in the UEFA Champions League.

Next comes derby day! City head over to the red quarter of Manchester to face U*****. The Blues then make their first appearance in this season's Carabao Cup, taking on Norwich City at the Etihad. We end the month with a home game against Sunderland in the Premier League.

How many wins will City get? I might be quite the optimist, but I genuinely think five from five. Let's look at each game.

First up, Coventry City. Frank Lampard's side may have romped to the Championship title last season, but their start to life back in the Premier League has been far from smooth. They've lost their opening two games, including a home defeat to Hull City. Look, there's no easy games in the EPL but this should come close.

Next, we head across Europe to play Porto in the Champions League. This is likely to be the toughest game in September's run. The reigning Primeira Liga Champions have started their title defence in superb form, winning all four of their league games so far this season. They're also yet to concede in the league (at the time of writing). So, a toughie but still one I fancy City to win.

Then comes the derby! I hate derby day. I hate the run up to it, I hate the pre-game nerves, I hate the anxiety. I hated the last derby at Old Trafford, where City were awful. But what I hate the most, is even though U***** are woeful, they often turn it on against us. It will be Enzo Maresca's first huge test as City boss but one I believe (well, hope) he passes with flying colours.

Then, City begin the defence of their Carabao Cup title with a home game against Norwich. They'll likely be wholesale starting XI changes for this one but again it's difficult seeing anything other than a Blues victory here.

Man City end September against Sunderland in the Premier League. The Mackems are a difficult side to judge really. They were excellent last season in their first back in the top flight since 2017. I'm not sure they'll enjoy quite the same success this time around, though. While Sunderland might cause us a problem or two, we should still sweep them aside with relative ease.
