Manchester City met Liverpool during the fourth matchday of the Women's Super League, and the hyped-up fixture did not disappoint as Man City performed a late comeback to seal three points.

Manchester City went into the weekend after beating European champions Barcelona 2-0 a few days prior and were hoping to take their confidence from their huge statement victory into their meeting with the Reds.

Man City played Liverpool three times during the 23/24 season and were successful in getting wins in all meetings. Going into their first encounter of the new season, the Cityzens were clear favourites in claiming yet another victory over the Reds and continuing their unbeaten streak of the 24/25 campaign.

The first half of the fixture saw Liverpool take a 1-0 lead through Olivia Smith right before halftime to put Man City behind a goal at the start of the next 45 minutes.

However, the woes didn't last too long for the Sky Blues as Lauren Hemp's cross was headed in by Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw to equalise the scoreline.

Shaw almost added City's second goal of the game but her efforts were rejected by the goalpost and kept it at 1-1.

The game looked to be ending in a goal apiece and also a point apiece, but Man City had very different plans as Bunny Shaw claimed her second goal of the afternoon and made it 2-1 in City's favour in the 92nd minute of the match.

Elsewhere, Arsenal were defeated 2-1 by Chelsea on Saturday; both clubs had European duties midweek and ended with very different outcomes as Chelsea claimed a very fortunate 3-2 victory against Real Madrid while Arsenal were the victim of a shock 5-2 thrashing by Bayern Munich.

Manchester City's rivals Manchester United were too strong for Tottenham as they beat Spurs 3-0.

The Women's Super League table has Manchester City right at the top after four fixtures, being the only club with 10 points. A great start for Gareth Taylor's side, who have started their season with six wins and one draw in all official competitions.

Gareth Taylor & Bunny Shaw reaction

Man City's boss Gareth Taylor was delighted with the win and said,

"Huge pleasure, it's a great moment. It's really nice to celebrate with the team at the end and full credit to the girls for backing it up with another result and after what we did in midweek is super impressive."

"I've been feeling a little bit under the weather but what a tonic that was. To celebrate that was incredible. It increases confidence throughout the team and there is an argument to say we've done that more with the amount of play we had. I felt we needed to sharpen up a little in the second half and play a little bit quicker than we were because Liverpool were making it really difficult. "

"I think it's great to reinforce the performance in some of the goof stuff we did against a difficult opponent by taking three points."

The scorer of both the goals of the game, Bunny Shaw then spoke about her thoughts about the 2-1 victory, "It was a difficult game today. We knew it'd be a tough one with how Liverpool play, but we knew if we stick to what we're capable of, we'll get the opportunities to score."

"Luckily, we got the job done. The thing we have to keep developing and improving is our mentality. I think even when were were 1-0 down, we spoke at halftime that once they come out, let's get an early one and put them on the back foot."

"At times, it was difficult but we managed to get there in the end."
