According to many reports, including from Fabrizio Romano, James Trafford looks set to join EPL side Leeds United in a deal worth over £40 million.
While it's certainly not a surprise, it's definitely a disappointment. As you can read in my Man City Keep, Sell, Loan article, a loan deal for Trafford would have been a great outcome for the Blues. I don't think Gianluigi Donnarumma will be a mainstay at City for years to come. A loan deal for Trafford, for him to return in a season (or even two), would've meant City wouldn't have to worry about who's between the sticks.
From Trafford's point of view, though, it's easy to see why he'd want this permanent move. It gives him a settled home at one of England's biggest clubs, he'll be their number one choice and will also give Trafford a fantastic opportunity to stake a claim in becoming the national team's first choice goalkeeper.
It's clear that James Trafford is a superb goalkeeper. The only real question mark with Trafford is he hasn't really had to opportunity to showcase his consistency. Last season, he was influential in City's cup runs, winning both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. However, these games were few and far between. One key sign of a world-class goalkeeper is their ability to perform week in, week out at the highest level. It's a shame he won't be able to prove he's up to the task at the Etihad Stadium.
So, what are Leeds United getting? Well, a fantastic shot-stopper for starters. A keeper good with his feet and can distribute the ball well (I mean, he's no Ederson but then again, who is?). A keeper who's grown in confidence, despite his lack of regular first team appearances. For me, England's next number one.
Man City will now have to buy a number two choice goalkeeper. The club did resign Pierce Charles, but have sent him straight on loan to EFL Championship side Queens Park Rangers. Marcus Bettinelli will act as second choice for now, but the club will certainly be looking for additional cover as we move into the 26/27 season.
Good luck at Leeds, James! And I just hope there's a buyback clause.
