Manchester City’s women's team were 3-0 winners in the Manchester derby in the Women’s Super League match weekend, a result that saw them remain as leaders.

Manchester City’s women got the crucial win against Manchester United in the Women’s Super League.

Going into their derby, Manchester City were leaders of the WSL, being one point away from Chelsea. A win meant the Cityzens would keep first place, while Chelsea were looking to get a win as well, to keep one point between themselves and Manchester City and also to take back first place.

Elsewhere, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham weren’t too far away as well, with only a few points separating them from Manchester City.

While the Cityzens got the 3-0 win against their opponents, with goals from Rebecca Knaak, Khadija Shaw and Lauren Hemp helping them do so, that meant they would be leaders for the entire match weekend no matter what other results would happen.

Elsewhere, Chelsea drew with Liverpool, and there was also a draw in the North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham, meaning only Manchester City out of the top five WSLin the wsl got themselves a win during the match weekend.

This also means that Manchester City are now three points away from Chelsea, giving them a positive boost for their WSL title aims.

The Women’s Super League will return in a few weeks, as there will be FA League Cup games, and then an international break for the women.

Manchester City’s Jade Rose on the win

"I mean we're ecstatic. To get top of the league and do it against Manchester United, it can’t get any sweeter than that.”

“I think it is a statement. This team is here to fight, we’re here to win, and we’re not going to accept anything less. I think today’s (Saturday) demonstrated that.”

“It feels incredible. I was asked earlier this week what it means to play in the derby. It’s a difficult question because I'm not from Manchester, but being here, seeing what it means, that shows me how much it means, and I was happy we were able to get the win.”
