The women's European Championships semi-finals got started on Tuesday night, as reigning winners England met surprise package Italy in a bid for the final.

The Women's Euros is edging closer to crowning its champion, as the final is prepared to take place this upcoming Sunday, the 27th, where the winner of the match between England and Italy will be playing either Germany or Spain.

The first fixture was between the Lionesses and Italy, two nations who have been through quite the intense tasks to make it here.

For England, a comeback against Sweden, where they levelled things after being 2-0 down and then secured their place due to a penalty shootout victory, was the result they were coming at the back of.

For Italy, while they didn't have to go as far as England did, they were very close to taking Norway into extra time as the game was at 1-1 near fulltime, but a late goal saw Italy clinch the 2-1 result.

The encounter between these two, which would decide who would make the final, was expected to be a dramatic match and one that couldn't be missed, and the overall game did not fail to deliver just that.

It took until the 33rd minute for a country to get themslves infront, and that came from Italy's Bonansea. The goal gave Italy a 1-0 lead to take in half time.

The second arrived with England desperately needing something to get back into the contest, but Italy remained firm.

Added time in the 90 arrived, and Italy found themselves a few moments away from making the final. However, in shocking fashion, the Lionesses equalised with a late goal that kept them with a chance to remain in the tournament and for Italy, heartbreak.

An extra 30 minuted took place, nothing could seperate the sides but that changed right in the last minutes before penalties. England won a penalty and were given the chance to win the game, while Chloe Kelly's intial effort was saved, she tucked in the rebound and gave England an astounishing 2-1 win.

The Lionesses did the impossible and thanks to that, they will have the opportunity to fight to retain their Euros' title.

The next fixture comes between Spain and Germany, which takes place on Wednesday at 20:00 (UK). Once the winner is decided, we will discover the final two nations of this tournament.
