One should have trust in their employer (at least, that is the hope), and Enzo Maresca is certainly showing belief in Manchester City's stance that the club is innocent of the recent guilty verdict it received for allegedly breaking financial fair play rules.
In his first press conference since the international break, when City learned of the decision on the more than 100 charges it was facing, the new club manager delivered answers in the exact way fans would expect. He couldn't say much about the club's appeal of the guilty verdict, but Maresca is exactly where he wants to be.
"The only thing I can say is something that I already said: There is a process ongoing, and at this moment I completely trust the club, so this is what I can say about that...," Maresca stated. "I trust the club because I trust the people; this is why I joined the club. There is not another club in the world that I would like to be."
Manchester City's Enzo Maresca answers the tough questions ahead of Liverpool match
The gaffer also said clearly that he didn't feel that the previous titles won during the time the rule-breaking was said to have occurred would be tainted. The trophies were earned on the pitch, no matter what else may or may not have been going on during the period when all the victories were occurring.
As expected, many of the questions, especially in the first part of the press conference, were about the charges and how Maresca feels about the club. Ultimately, the reporters expecting any other kind of answer besides that he still believes in Manchester City would be foolish.
If any further proof was needed of that, one need look no further than Enzo Maresca coming back to the club at all. He agreed to become the manager after Pep Guardiola stepped down after last season, knowing the club was facing charges. If he didn't think City would be successful in the original verdict or after the appeal, he might not have decided to become the gaffer.
The line of questioning was expected, to be sure. This was the first time the media had a real chance to speak with Maresca about the charges. When players have to speak with the media, they will also have to answer the same kinds of questions.
One day this whole mess will end, one way or another. What won't change is Manchester City fans supporting their favorite club. Even if the guilty verdict is upheld after appeal, fans are going to support City. But just as Maresca kept saying, why focus on the negative? Who knows what the future holds in terms of the club being found guilty.
