Manchester City have broken their own club record transfer fee they set earlier in the summer with the £116 million signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, as they have completed a £125 million transfer for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández.
The transfer ties the record for highest transfer fee in Premier League history, matching Liverpool’s move for Alexander Isak last summer.
Fernandez joined Chelsea for a hefty fee at the time, but the club were able to make a profit by sending him to Man City.
Fernandez featured in 170 games for Chelsea across all competitions, scoring 31 goals and creating 30 assists. He was also a key player in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup winning squad, where he made himself known on the world’s biggest stage, being awarded the young player of the tournament.
Fernandez has been a consistent player in Chelsea’s midfield for years, but he looked his best when now Man City head coach Enzo Maresca was at the wheel. In his only full season with Maresca, he put up some of his best numbers with 9 goals and 17 assists, helping his squad go on to win the UEFA Europa Conference League, and FIFA Club World Cup.
Maresca was dismissed from the club about halfway into the next season and landed at Manchester City this year, where he will now reunite with the Argentinian midfielder, completing a rebuild of the club’s midfield.
Ownership continues to give Maresca everything he needs with another record transfer midfielder as he continues to build his own squad rather than carrying on with most of the players Pep Guardiola brought in during his era of dominance.
Expectations will be high with a Premier League record-tying price tag as Fernandez will look to impress City at the Etihad in a transfer that will go down as one of the biggest deadline day signings in history.
