It had also looked like Haaland was offside too, but there was no transparency in the drawing of the lines on the broadcast. This is another controversial moment for VAR, which has come under immense criticism since it was introduced in the Premier League.

Failing to get his side to get the result against 10-men was disappoiting for Carrick. This will put more pressure on the United manager, especially after their surprise defeat to Hull City on the opening day of the campaign.
