Manchester City met Everton last night during their first FA League Cup game of the 23/24 season, and a 2-1 win for the Citizens got them three points to add onto the table, with English international Jess Park, and returning from injury Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw both producing shining performances.

After their 1-1 draw with Chelsea a few days earlier, Man City headed into this game knowing how important getting points in a group containing Everton, Leicester City, and Liverpool really is.

Jess Park got City off the mark at the 21st minute, with Khadija Shaw providing the assist, which put City in front going into the second half. In the 47th minute, Mary Fowler assisted Shaw to score her first goal of the new season, and, giving City a 2-0 lead.

Despite Toni Dugan getting a goal back for Everton in the 93rd minute, it wasn’t enough for them to get anything but that one goal from the game.

Manchester City have gotten off to the ideal start to their League Cup campaign, but elsewhere in the group, Leicester got the better over Liverpool as they won with the same scoreline as City, 2-1. Man City are now placed on second, with Leicester on first.

Both Jess Park and Khadija Shaw gave immaculate performances last night, showing their quality and importance on the pitch. Jess Park was honoured by being selected for player of the match; ironically, she achieved this against Everton, who she spent last season on loan with.

Head manager Gareth Taylor went on to express his delight with the team, ” We have really good strength in depth. I think the performance over the three games has given us different things. The signs are there that the team is coming together and playing with real identity.”

Manchester City will return back to the WSL, as they play Bristol City on Sunday, 15th October.
