Manchester City put a stamp on their Champions League run with Bayern rout

In what was certainly the clash of the Champions league quarter-finals, Manchester City faced German juggernauts Bayern Munich in a bid to reach yet another semi-final. The Citizens would find themselves 3-0 up heading back to Munich after a dazzling display at the Etihad.

After a cagey first half, which included an Erling Haaland penalty miss, City eventually found the back of the net curtesy of the Norwegian superstar. Kevin De Bruyne chipped in with another assist as Haaland turned Dayot Upamecano inside out to break the deadlock and put City up 4-0 on aggregate.

An 83rd minute Joshua Kimmich penalty was not enough to shift the momentum as City held on to secure yet another spot in the Champions League’s last four. In fact, they became just the third English team to ever do so, following in the footsteps of Manchester United and Chelsea.

Those are just one of the many milestones the Citizens reached by beating Bayern, as Pep Guardiola and Erling Haaland continue to match or pile on more records as the season winds down to a dramatic close.

Pep Guardiola breaks yet another Champions League record

Guardiola is a man who has little left to achieve in football. At this point in his career, he continues to prove why he is considered one of the greatest managers of all time, if not the greatest.

By defeating his former team, he became the first manager to ever reach 10 Champions League semi-finals. His ratio in reaching the final might not be spectacular, making the grand game three times, but he is hoping to make his second final in charge of the English side.

Haaland continued his ridiculous goal scoring rate in Europe’s elite club competition, reaching 35 goals in just 27 games. That puts him ahead of the likes of Wayne Rooney, Samuel Eto’o, and Kaká as well as making him the quickest player to reach 35 goals in the competition.

The reigning English champions have to keep their foot on the gas if they wish to catch Arsenal and have a rematch from last year’s heart-breaking semi-final against Real Madrid on the 9th and 17th of May. With a historic treble still on the line, it’s all to play for with the final month of the season left to go.
