Manchester City advanced to the next round of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 victory over Chelsea, in what turned out to be a difference in converting chances.

City’s class pulled them away from their cockney opponents as Jack Grealish and Stefan Ortega were the star performers in a competition that means a lot to the club and Pep Guardiola. The hunt for the Quadruple is on – too early, way too early to mention.

Chelsea had 15 shots, five of which were on target, and it could have been a different story albeit for a colossus in goal; surely, the best number two in the Premier League based on his performances this season.

The match was relatively even in the first half with Grealish having the best of City’s chances, however Edouard Mendy was up to the task of denying Jack a chance to stick a finger up to his doubters. Those doubts based, purely, on goals and assists statistics, not performances.

However, it was down to Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez with the goals in a five-minute period early in the second half as it proved the difference.
