City v. Copenhagen: Player ratings from a frustrating Champions League night
By James Fudge
Ederson – 6
Never had too much to do in the goal and nearly gave away an own goal in the opening five minutes.
Joao Cancelo – 7
Played on both flanks and performed as you expect from the in-form defender. Could’ve won the game with a shot from outside the box in the closing minutes.
Manuel Akanji – 6.5
Played out of his normal position and his comfortability failed to show at right back, particularly going forward. Defended impressively though.
Aymeric Laporte – 7
Had an involvement in winning the penalty and looked solid. Came off with a few minutes to go and looked like an injury had returned.
Sergio Gomez – 3
Feel for the guy. He made an error by getting on the wrong side of the attacker and gave away the foul, ultimately a decision that cost City the chance to dominate in Copenhagen.
Rodri – 7 MOTM
Unluckily had a goal disallowed for a harsh handball. Played as a centre-back in some stages of the second half so was unable to contribute going forward as much. Didn’t put a foot wrong though.
Ilkay Gundogan – 7
The midfield got overrun at times but that wasn’t his fault. Good in possession but largely kept it simple.
Kevin De Bruyne – 6.5
Had a better second half and tested the ‘keeper a few times in the game. Probably hampered by the red-card decision and change of tactics.
Maybe I am judging him harshly but that’s his high standards.
Jack Grealish – 5.5
Can’t remember anything from the game that he improved. Hugged the touchline when playing the second striker, isolating Alvarez even more.
Riyad Mahrez -4
Can’t really fault him for the handball as a harsh decision but his penalty was poor, which ultimately denied the three points.
Julian Alvarez – 5.5
Didn’t do enough in the game despite being isolated from the tactical changes following the red card. Can only remember a shot from him in the first half.
Substitutes
Ruben Dias – 6.5
Defended impressively after replacing Mahrez on 32 minutes.
