Rodri Thunder Rocketing to 2027 with Contract Extension
By Laura Graves
Manchester City announced today that Rodri has extended his contract to 2027.
Rodrigo “Rodri” has signed a three-year extension to his contract at the club. An act that shows just how much he is valued in Manchester, and his commitment to the blues.
The defensive midfielder started off slowly whilst learning his new role under Pep, and has since continued to improve, earning himself high praise for his contribution to the most recent Premier League win.
Many City fans have hailed Rodri their Player of the Season since missing out on the accolade to Kevin De Bruyne.
The Spaniard ranked number one amongst all midfielders for recoveries with 292, successful passes with 2629, and aerial wins with 72% during Manchester City’s 21/22 PL title winning campaign.
He also had some crucial moments during the season which helped lead Manchester City to their 4th Premier League title in five years. With blocked shots, late winners, Premier League deciding equaliser in the final game against Villa, and the famous “handball”.
Rodri joined the blues in the summer of 2019 from Atletico Madrid, making 151 appearances in his three seasons in Manchester, winning two Premier League trophies, two Carabao Cups and a Community Shield.
With regards to his extension, Rodri states:
"“Joining City in 2019 is the best decision I have made in my career”. Adding, “I have loved every second. The fans have been amazing with me, I feel totally supported by the club and the manager pushes me every single day”.Rodri also said, “I have improved so much as a player, and I want to thank Pep and all the backroom staff for their help. They are completely committed to helping me become the best player I can be, and I appreciate their hard work”."
Acknowledgement of the fans will be like music to their ears.
Txiki, City’s Director of Football was just as happy to tie him down until 2027 as the fans, he commented:
"“Rodri has been exceptional since coming here, so I am delighted we have managed to agree this new deal”."
The 26-year-old has been credited for his football intelligence and great reading of the game, passing ability, athleticism, and the ability to show up in big moments.
With the recent addition of Kalvin Phillips to the Manchester City squad who takes up the same position as Rodri and has a similar role, it will be interesting to see how both these players contribute to the upcoming season.
Rodri has cemented his place in the side, surely? Which leaves some with a sense of wonder and curiosity about Pep’s plans for the upcoming season. Both players are far too good to be a back up to one another.
Now that Rodri’s extension is complete, rumours of further contract extensions being discussed are circulating. It is a popular opinion amongst City fans that the most important one to get over the line next is the bald boss, Pep Guardiola.
I’ll just leave you all with this (posted 11th July, the day before the news of Rodri’s extension was announced):
Who will be a pundit, hey?!
