Manchester City considering move for Arsenal star
Manchester City have reportedly added Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney to their transfer wishlist, as Pep Guardiola looks to shape his squad ahead of the new season. This is according to The Scotsman that says Manchester City are “keeping tabs” on the Arsenal star.
Rated as one of the best left-backs in England, Kieran Tierney, 25, has been a valuable performer for Arsenal since joining from Celtic in 2019. Although recurrent injury problems have not helped him bring consistency to his game, when fit, the Scottish international has been one of the first names on Mikel Arteta’s team sheet.
Such has been the 25-year-old’s performances for Arsenal and Scotland, when fully fit and running, which has also seen him attract interest from Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona over recent months, reports The Scotsman. Now, Kieran Tierney also finds himself on the radar of Manchester City, who are on the lookout for a new left-back ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
Joao Cancelo has been operating at left-back for the Cityzens and with great efficiency and purpose, but Pep Guardiola wants to improve the area of the squad, with Oleksandr Zinchenko looking to leave the club this summer and Benjamin Mendy still suspended for legal matters. Should Zinchenko depart, Guardiola will be left with a lack of cover for Cancelo, who is naturally a right-back.
Thus, Manchester City have seemingly made bolstering the left-back unit a priority following the high-profile capture of Erling Haaland, with Brighton’s Marc Cucurella emerging as a target of late. Cucurella is a man in demand after a strong season with Brighton, but is rumoured to be valued at around £50m.
Perhaps, the Sky Blues find the Seagulls’ valuation of their star left wing-back a bit more and have switched their attention to Tierney, who knows? But with Tierney contracted to the Emirates Stadium until 2026, Arsenal are also expected to ask something similar to Cucurella’s reported price tag or a lot more if City intensify their pursuit.
But one thing is certain—the club has started their long search for a new left-back!
