REPORT: Man City in pursuit to ‘hijack’ Manchester United target
Man City manager Pep Guardiola has reportedly stepped up his pursuit in order to ‘hijack’ the transfer of local rivals Manchester United target, Frenkie De Jong according to a report from Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo.
Barcelona is currently in the process of offloading their players to ease their current ‘difficult’ financial situation and they will be open to selling Frenkie De Jong this summer. The Catalan giants value the player at around £85 million and have rejected United’s first official bid of around £70 million a few days back – reported by Fabrizio Romano a few days back.
Although the Dutchman has been reluctant in trying a new experience, Barca may need to cash in the player in their strive to balance the books. Manchester United’s new manager Erik Ten Hag is expected to be working behind the scenes as he is seriously considering Frenkie De Jong as his first piece for ‘the great United rebuild’ – hoping for a reunion with the player.
The interesting thing to watch here will be Manchester City’s stance for the Dutchman as we search for a reliable with De Jong’s name on the list. While City is actively in the pursuit of Kalvin Phillips’ signature in order to replace Fernandinho – a go at Frenkie seems unexpected from Pep Guardiola but it’s always an exciting thing to watch as Pep may look to make things tough for the club from the other part of town.
After Barca’s ‘rejection’ of the first bid from United, there has been no significant movement on the saga while Pep Guardiola and his associates wait and watch the situation develop. If the chance provides, then certainly an approach will be made in the next few days.
