Manchester City has unveiled a permanent statue of their legendary striker Sergio Kun Aguero.
The club’s legend statue was unveiled at the Etihad Stadium on the tenth anniversary of the historic 93:20 goal which won City the Premier League title.
The statue remembers the moment of that winning goal that won the club’s first title and shows the striker in the famous celebration afterwards.
The large statue of the Argentine taking his shirt off is situated on the east side of the Etihad Stadium and was made by the ‘award-winning’ Philadelphian sculptor Andy Scott. The club has confirmed on its official website that the focal point “has been constructed using thousands of welded pieces of galvanised steel.”
That moment remembered sparked a dominance of the club with Etihad hosting a title-winning party a further four times; a possible party is also incoming should the club win the final two games.
Speaking on the Club’s website Aguero reminisced the beauty of what was arguably the club’s greatest moment. “Truthfully, it is a very beautiful thing for me, to see myself 10 years ago is very moving.“ he said.
A new era was embarked on that day and the moment was made even sweeter after seeing Manchester United’s dream snatched away in the final moments. After signing in 2011 from Atletico Madrid, he soon became a crowd favourite and spent ten years in Manchester becoming one of the league’s most deadly strikers and argued as one of the Premier League’s best foreign import.
"“In those 10 years I was able to win a lot of trophies and was able to help the club become one of the most important in the world. I am very grateful to club for making this statue in my recognition of my football career in Manchester. It is something very special.”"
His departure from the club saw him return to Spain with FC Barcelona, however his season was cut short by a cardiac incident that eventually forced him into a premature retirement.
City’s Chairman Khaldoon AI Mubarak, who was in attendance at the unveiling, praised Aguero’s contribution to the Citizens and said he certainly deserves a statue.
"“Sergio Aguero’s contribution to Manchester City in a defining era for the Club cannot be overstated. He is without a doubt one of the greatest players that has ever played the game.”"
Aguero who is a record goalscorer with 260 goals with 15 major trophies at City, including five Premier League titles, one FA Cup and a record six League Cups.
It now joins alongside the Vincent Kompany and David Silva statues in this new defining era, lit up at night during those special Champions League nights and evening fixtures when the sun settles in the Manchester sky. Forever a hero in the blue half of the city.
