Highly-rated Ajax forward on the radar of Manchester City
Manchester City are among a few Premier League clubs to hold a long-standing interest in Ajax’s highly-rated winger Antony, reports 90min.
Since arriving at Ajax from Sao Paulo in 2020, Antony, 21, has adjusted to life in the Eredivisie like a duck to water. He has gone from strength to strength for the Dutch heavyweights, bagging 21 goals and 18 assists in 71 appearances in all competitions.
The five-cap Brazilian international is enjoying another stellar season with Ajax, with 19 goal contributions in 25 games so far catching the eye of some Premier League clubs. Apart from Manchester City, the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea are all keen on Antony, while there is interest from Spanish and Italian clubs as well, claims 90min.
However, the 21-year-old Brazilian has indicated through his representatives that he wishes to play in the Premier League, the report adds. Back in December, Ajax boss Erik ten Hag revealed it will be difficult to keep the young winger beyond this season.
Meanwhile, Manchester City are known to be huge admirers of Antony, whose contributions have been key in Ajax’s bid to retain the league title. The uncertain futures of Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus beyond 2023 could intensity the Sky Blues’ interest in the Ajax starlet, the report further states.
Pep Guardiola wants Sterling to sign a new contract at Man City but the English forward still remains unsure over his long-term future. Sterling has previously flirted with a move away from the Etihad Stadium, and despite turning around the season after a slow start, negotiations over a fresh deal has hardly seen any progress.
With Jesus’ contract also up in 2023, Antony becomes a viable target for Manchester City. Quick and decisive with excellent dribbling skills, Antony is a sublime talent who can shine under the tutelage of Guardiola at City. He can unlock his true potential at the Etihad Stadium and become the next big thing to come out of the famed Sao Paulo academy.
But with the 21-year-old being highly sought-after in the transfer market, Man City will need to make their move quickly.
