Official: Manchester City reach an agreement with River Plate for the sale of Julian Alvarez
Manchester City have successfully signed Julian Alvarez from River Plate. The deal was announced by River Plate president Jorge Britto.
City have been in the market for a new number nine. The Cityzens have failed to replace former striker and club legend Sergio Aguero and now Alvarez’s signing suggests that the Sky Blues could look to count on him if they fail to land Erling Haaland next summer.
Haaland, 21, is being courted a host of elite European clubs. The likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, and Chelsea are also said to be interested in signing the Borussia Dortmund striker.
With that said, Alvarez’s signing comes as a welcome surprise for the fans as Manchester City do not usually conduct business in the winter window but within Manchester City, Alvarez is considered to be a ‘star in the making’.
River Plate are guaranteed €18.5 million to sell their striker. The 21-year-old Argentine striker though will remain at River Plate until the conclusion of the ongoing season, before linking up with his new teammates at Manchester.
River Plate president Jorge Britto confirmed that the deal with Manchester City has been completed.
"“We’ve a full agreement with Manchester City to sell Julián. The deal is done”He’s gonna stay on loan here at River Plate until July 7”Source: Twitter"
An official statement from the side of the defending Premier League champions is expected before January 31st.
It is fairly a long shot but in many circles, Alvarez is considered to be a fond resemblance of Sergio Aguero and if he does make it big at the Etihad, it will be impressive to watch.
The most impressive part about this transfer was that City acted swiftly, knowing that many clubs were circling Alvarez.
The 21-year-old’s first-team future though depends on City being able to sign Erling Haaland, who is said to prefer a move to Spain. The Spanish giants in Real Madrid and Barcelona are touted to be one of the favorites to sign the Norweigan talent.
