Manchester City was the preferred destination for Joao Felix
Manchester City have been linked with Joao Felix in recent times, with the young Portuguese striker failing to prove his £113 million price tag at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.
Felix still remains as Atletico Madrid’s most-expensive buy ever but the 21-year-old has struggled to fit into Diego Simeone’s defensive system and thus, goals have been hard to come by.
The Cityzens are still in their search of a perfect, young number nine, who can emulate the success that former striker and record goal-scorer, Sergio Aguero had at the club.
The Sky Blues have been linked with a number of young strikers in recent times. The likes of Erling Haaland, Dusan Vlahovic, and Joao Felix have dominated the majority of the rumors. With that said, it has now come to light that Felix’s agent Jorge Mendes preferred a move to Manchester City for the striker, before Benfica’s £113 million deal with Atleti was finalized, in 2019. This comes as per Marca (h/t Record newspaper).
It is understood that the source revealed a leaked audiotape containing the voice of the striker’s agent, Jorge Mendes. In the audiotape, Mendes can be heard saying:
"“The best thing for Joao Félix would be Manchester City for Guardiola . It will be the most expensive signing in Portuguese football.”Source: Marca"
While this certainly makes things interesting, it remains to be seen how this transfer saga plays out. There is no doubt that Felix would find greater success at City because of the system that is employed at the Etihad. Currently, the player is struggling to find the back of the net on a consistent basis with only two strikers leading the line.
While Felix has been deemed ‘untouchable’ by the Rojiblancos, City are likely to launch an attempt for him in case their pursuit of both Erling Haaland and Dusan Vlahovic fails. Felix is still 21 and has a long way to go and could be one for the future.
Do you think the Cityzens will be able to sign Felix anytime in the future?
