Real Madrid star shoots down Manchester City links
Manchester City have been linked with Luka Modric in recent times. The Croatian midfielder, despite being 36-years-old has shown no signs of slowing down and is currently running the midfield for the Los Blancos.
City have been linked with a move for the 36-year-old on a lucrative 2-year deal that would see him spend a season or two at the Etihad before moving on to the MLS, to one of City’s sister clubs.
Modric’s current contract expires next summer and an agreement hasn’t been reached yet. Having said that, after the Whites’ victory over the Athletic club in the Spanish Supercup final, Modric confirmed that he is keen on continuing with the former La Liga champions and possibly, end his career at Madrid.
The Croat managed to enter the scoresheet in the final and was also adjudged as the player of the match. In the post-match interview, Modric said:
"“I’m doing everything to keep going for a few more years. I make an effort, and there’s nothing better for me than being a Real Madrid player, enjoying every day and winning trophies. It’s 18 now in nine-and-a-half years and I hope more will come.“I had a good relationship with the club and I continue like this, I’m sure we’ll reach an agreement and do what we think is best for both of us.“It didn’t take us two minutes to reach an agreement. I’m not thinking about that right now. My wish is known, I hope the club too”.Source: MEN"
It is clear that Modric wants Madrid and it is fairly evident that Madrid also want to keep Modric. Despite having a talented pool of midfielders in Asensio, Fede Valverde, and Eduardo Camavinga, Modric has managed to force his way into Carlo Ancelotti’s XI and has been absolutely vital in Madrid maintaining their La Liga title charge this season.
In the 14 appearances that he has made for Madrid this season (La Liga), the midfielder has managed to register 4 assists. His gameplay has not always been about the one-pass assist or finishing but in the build-up and maintenance of possession for extended periods.
Against Barca in the Spanish Supercup, Modric was one of the best pressers on the pitch and was rarely dispossessed.
Modric has effectively put an end to the rumors linking him with Manchester City and now the ball is in Real Madrid’s court. Whether the Los Blancos will hand him a 1-year or a 2-year extension is something that remains to be seen.
