Luka Modric has managed to establish himself as a household name in Madrid, since his £40 million move in 2013. The Croat has been one of the most consistent performing players for the Los Blancos and the midfielder has managed to make 441 appearances for the former La Liga champions.

At the age of 36, Modric is still going strong, something that one rarely sees when players cross 35. With that said, many teams are still interested in signing the 2018 Ballan d’Or winner and El Nacional claims that Manchester City are keeping a close watch on Luka Modric’s contract situation and are ready to jump in if the current stand-off continues.

The source understands that the 36-year-old is unsatisfied with the latest contract proposal put forward by Los Blancos president, Florentino Perez.  The latter’s latest proposal is said to be in line with the club’s policy of handing out only 1-year extensions to players above the age of 30. Modric is said to be looking to sign a 2-year extension as that would highlight his importance in the Los Blancos set-up.

Manchester City are said to be following the developments closely and will look to sign Modric, whose intentions are to retire at Real Madrid. The player wants to enter the Qatar world cup later this year on the back of a strong run of games and is said to be open to a Premier League switch if his contract demands are not met.

The Spanish outlet further adds that Modric is expecting Real Madrid to ‘return the favor’ in honor of his gesture of taking a pay-cut when the club was suffering financially due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

City are said to be looking to offer a 2-year contract to the player, one that would see him spend a season at the Etihad and then move out to one of City’s sister clubs in the MLS.

Manchester City do not really need Luka Modric at the moment as their midfield is packed. Yes, Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan have become injury-prone off-late but that hasn’t stopped the duo from producing quality performances week in and out. With that said, the Cityzens are said to be saving up for Erling Haaland and are tipped to go all-out for the Norweigan talent next summer.
