Manchester City struggling to land £42m-rated Barcelona star
Manchester City have been linked with Barcelona starlet, Pablo Gavira. The Spaniard has caught the attention of top European clubs with his high-work rate and maturity on the ball. The midfielder is currently a regular starter under Xavi and has more or less cemented his place in the Spain XI as well.
Gavi, 17, is one of the brightest prospects going around and Barcelona are currently in talks with the former La Masia graduate over a new contract. With that said, Gavi’s current contract runs out in 2023 and the former La Liga champions’ current priority is to extend the midfielder’s stay at the club.
The 17-year-old’s contract also contains a £42 million release clause and Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool are said to be interested in triggering the clause. The player, however, is keen on staying at Barca and which is why Manchester City are struggling to sign the wonderkid. This comes as per Caughtoffside.
The midfielder’s intentions to succeed at Barca have also been confirmed by the reliable transfer journalist, Fabrizio Romano. The Italian football journalist also revealed that Barcelona are currently in talks with Gavi over a new contract that will not have a release clause.
Chelsea, who are also said to be interested in signing the midfielder are likely to be shot down by the player who does not think of any team other than Barca, as it stands.
Liverpool have been linked with the young Spaniard but have not made any attempts or contacts to sign the prospect. Having said that, Barcelona are unlikely to part ways with Gavi as he has established himself as one of the vital cogs in Xavi’s engine. The former Al-Sadd manager is said to be a fan of Gavi and has heaped praise on the 17-year-old on numerous occasions.
This season, the young midfielder has managed to find the back of the once for the Blaugrana and has assisted on three occasions. The 17-year-old, though, needs to work on his tackling as he seems to get carried away a bit too often, leading to sanctions.
The Cityzens need an able replacement for the likes of Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne, who have been injury-prone in the last couple of years and they are in their thirties as well.
Do you think Manchester City will be able to lure Gavi to the Etihad?
