In-form Real Madrid star on the radar of Manchester City
Karim Benzema has been absolutely sensational for Real Madrid ever since Cristiano Ronaldo left the club in 2018. Benzema has been vital for the Los Blancos in front of the goal and was one of the major reasons why Real Madrid lifted the La Liga title in the 2019/20 season and came perilously close to winning it for the second time in a row last season.
His partnership with Vinicius Jr. this season has been absolutely eye-watering.
The Frenchman’s stats don’t lie as well. In the 13 La Liga outings this season, the 32-year-old has found the net 11 times and assisted on 7 occasions. With such serious numbers to back his case up, Madrid are planning to offer him a new contract, which would keep him at the club beyond 2023.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is said to be keen on signing the Frenchman next summer as the Cityzens’ hunt for a proper striker continues. This comes as per El Nacional.
Benzema is an out-and-out goal-scorer and in many ways, is similar to Harry Kane. The 32-year-old plays an active role in the buildup leading to the goal and is not merely a finisher. This property of his alone is enough to enter Pep Guardiola’s plans.
However, it must be mentioned that El Nacional is not the most reliable source when it comes to transfer rumors involving Real Madrid or Barcelona and this can be taken with a pinch of salt but it would make sense if the Cityzens were really looking at him as an option to lead their line.
The source understands that City are planning to make a move for Benzema next summer and are prepared for the hefty price tag that Real Madrid would quote him at.
With the Cityzens said to be the favorites among those in the race to sign Erling Haaland next summer, it is likely that they would pursue the 21-year-old rather than going all-in for Benzema who is 32.
