Manchester City edging closer to signing under-performing Barcelona star
Manchester City have been linked with a move for under-performing Barcelona midfielder, Frenkie de Jong. The Cityzens are tipped to have an active winter window in January and Frenkie de Jong seems to be their wishlist, as per the Sun.
Having not made any effective signings this past summer window, Manchester City are looking to rectify their mistake by signing the 24-year-old midfielder from Barcelona.
Club legend and veteran Fernandinho in all likelihood is set to leave the club next term and Rodri would be the only player in his position in the City ranks. Frenkie de Jong is a versatile player who can play all over the mid-pitch, thus making him a valuable asset. Moreover, his arrival would only intensify the competition for the midfield ranks in the City XI.
Frenkie is at his best when given an attacking role and with Kevin De Bruyne’s injuries becoming frequent, one could argue that FdJ is perhaps one of the better options available to replace the Belgian.
Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho, Rodri, KDB, Jack Grealish, and Phil Foden are the players who could play in the midfield for Pep Guardiola, and going by this, it can be argued that FdJ is not really a priority at the moment.
Barcelona are said to be asking a fee in the range of £75 million for the Dutchman and one must not forget that Manchester City still do lack a striker.
The Sky Blues have been linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland and are said to be the favorites to sign the 21-year-old talent. Haaland’s release clause worth €75 million becomes active only next summer and that money would be better spent for this cause.
Haaland is the need of the hour for Cityzens and Frenkie. While FdJ is a fantastic player, all arguments pale in comparison to City’s dire need of a proper number nine.
