Update: Manchester City are ready to hand a new contract to their star midfielder
By Zoheb Alam
In the past couple of months, Manchester City have managed to hand in new deals to some of their star members including the likes of Fernandinho, Zack Steffen, and Ruben Dias. It has now been reported that the Sky Blues are considering a fresh contract for another first-team superstar.
A fresh report from Italian journalist Ekrem Konur has claimed that City will soon negotiate a two-year agreement with Ilkay Gundogan. The German international has been an excellent addition to Guardiola’s side since his summer move in 2016.
In his five-year-old stint at the Etihad, the 31-year-old midfielder has won three Premier League titles and has also lifted the EFL Cup four times. He has been an integral member of Guardiola’s starting side and has continued to play a significant role in the centre of the park.
Gundogan,31, has already made a decent start for the Sky Blues this term and has scored twice in the Championship. However, the former Dortmund man has not been a regular starter in the City side this term and has often played second fiddle to Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva.
For now, it seems that the Sky Blues are likely to tie down the German midfielder to a new agreement. Currently, the midfielder has two years left on his contract, which means that the player will stay at the Etihad till the summer of 2023.
Handing fresh terms to Gundogan will surely be seen as a smart move from the City authorities. Moving on, the Citizens are expected to announce the player’s extension by the end of this month.
As a team, Manchester City have had a dominant start to their new season as they have been able to churn out favorable results in both Premier League and the Champions League. Guardiola’s men are slated to return to action against Everton later this month.
