Harry Kane opens up on failed Manchester City switch for the first time
Manchester City had one goal this past summer window and it was to find the perfect Sergio Aguero replacement. Aguero left the club on a Bosman to join FC Barcelona this past summer and City had Harry Kane on their mind to replace their club legend and leading goal-scorer.
With the ongoing trophy-draught at Tottenham Hotspur, Kane did everything in his power last season, notching up the most assists as well as the most goals in the league. It was, however, not enough as Spurs failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. In the backdrop of that, it was quite evident that he wanted to leave the Lillywhites in a bid to secure some silverware to decorate his already-illustrious career.
City made as many as three official bids to Tottenham Hotspur, all of which were shot down by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy who was insistent on keeping ahold of his main man. Having said that, City’s pursuit of the Englishman finally came to an end when the 29-year-old himself, announced on Twitter that he would be staying with Spurs for the season to follow.
Kane has not been at his best this season and many pundits believe that it is down to the lack of stability at the White Hart Lane, now that the 2018 UCL runners-up sacked their newly appointed manager in Nuno Espirito Santo after only 10 games into the League.
With Antonio Conte’s arrival, there is a glimmer of hope that Spurs could be back to playing their best football but it remains to be seen.
Speaking about the failed summer move to Manchester City, Harry Kane opined,
"“Obviously there was a lot of talk and speculation over the summer, the first real time that has probably happened to me in my career, but that is part and parcel of learning and being a big player having to deal with those situations,”“I think I dealt with it well and now it’s just about focusing. There’s still a long way to go at club level and now for me it’s just about finishing these two games strongly with England.”Source: MEN"
There is a realistic chance of Manchester City returning for Harry Kane next term but it is highly unlikely that they will. Erling Haaland’s release clause worth €75 million will become active next summer and City are considered to be the front-runners to sign the Norweigan talent.
Kane to City could still be on but do you think City would prefer Kane (29) over Haaland (21), who is considered to be among the best strikers in World football?
