Manchester City interested in signing RB Leipzig starlet
According to SportBILD journalist Christian Falk, Manchester City are keeping tabs on RB Leipzig’s creative midfielder Dani Olmo.
A highly-rated talent, Dani Olmo, 23, has shone in the Bundesliga since arriving at RB Leipzig from Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb in January 2020. In recent years, the Spaniard has enjoyed a meteoric rise in stock, with 12 goals and 14 assists in 64 games for RB Leipzig to show for his efforts.
Thus, it isn’t surprising to see Olmo on the radar of some of Europe’s top clubs. As per Christian Falk, Manchester United are also interested in the RB Leipzig attacker and have scouted him many times. And both the Manchester clubs will move for the Spanish international if Barcelona cannot afford to pay for his services next year.
The 23-year-old attacker played for Barcelona’s youth teams before moving to Dinamo Zagreb in 2014. Barcelona president Joan Laporta is keen to sign players who have the Barcelona DNA and understand the club’s values and traditions, but the Catalan club are currently hamstrung with a lack of funds.
Despite the focus very much likely to be on the signing of a striker, Manchester City are freshly linked with a player from a different position. The interest in Dani Olmo is understandable, though, as the Sky Blues can do with an addition in attack if Raheem Sterling departs.
Sterling, 26, is considering his future at Manchester City after falling down the attacking pecking order under Pep Guardiola this season. The England international has struggled to compete with his compatriots in Phil Foden and Jack Grealish for a starting berth, starting only three out of eight Premier League games this season.
And owing to his contract expiring in 2023, many European clubs are likely keeping tabs on Sterling’s situation at the Etihad Stadium. Should Sterling depart in January or at the end of the season, Manchester City could do well in replacing him by Olmo.
A player of Olmo’s qualities and versatility would fit perfectly in Guardiola’s system and if City are genuinely interested in him, they must go all out for his signature in January itself.
