Manchester City plot shock swoop for Liverpool superstar
It is an open secret that Manchester City had made the signing of a prolific striker a top priority during the summer transfer window.
The English champions were desperate to fill the void Sergio Aguero had left behind over the summer with Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, but the north London club were hellbent on not selling their talismanic figure after a poor last season that saw them miss out on the Champions League for the second successive year.
Thus, it won’t surprise the fans if Manchester City reignite their search for a striker during the January transfer window. What could shock many are the latest reports emanating from Spain, with Catalan outlet El Nacional claiming the Sky Blues are plotting a mindboggling swoop for Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah.
Mohamed Salah, 29, is undoubtedly the best player in the Premier League at the moment having started the new season on fire. He is unstoppable, irresistible and deadly in the box, scoring one world-class goal after another for Jurgen Klopp’s side. The Egyptian international has already 10 in as many games across all competitions, thereby, becoming the fastest player ever to reach the 100-league club for Liverpool.
However, Salah’s contract expires in the summer of 2023 and the Reds’ immediate aim is to secure his long-term future at Anfield as quickly as possible. As per El Nacional, the twinkle-toed Egyptian has increased his wage demands and is eyeing a staggering €30 million per season, which Liverpool are reluctant to meet.
This has put Manchester City on red alert, with the Mancunian club set to test Liverpool’s resolve with a £75 million bid next summer, when Salah will have only a year left on his contract. The report adds Pep Guardiola had plans to sign a striker but the Reds’ African star could take on the No.9 role at the Etihad Stadium that the Manchester City coach is looking for.
Manchester City could lose Raheem Sterling in January, with the England international not pleased with his current role under Guardiola this season. Sterling recently admitted that he’s open to ending his time at the Etihad Stadium for an abroad club that’ll guarantee him regular game time.
With Bernardo Silva also tipped for an exit, this could potentially open up the space for the Cityzens to recruit a top forward before next season commences. And Mohamed Salah, who currently has the world at his feet, would simply be a dream signing for Pep’s Sky Blues.
