Manchester City heavily scout Bundesliga’s emerging talent
According to reliable SportBILD journalist Christian Falk (h/t Sport Witness), Manchester City have scouted Bayer Leverkusen starlet Florian Wirtz on numerous occasions.
Florian Wirtz, 18, is one of Bundesliga’s jewels and has been nominated for the 2021 Golden Boy award following his eye-catching displays with Bayer Leverkusen. The teenager was one of the breakout stars of the 2020/21 Bundesliga campaign, registering five goals and six assists, as well as two goals in the Europa League.
After a successful breakthrough campaign with Bayer Leverkusen, Wirtz starred in Germany U21’s 2021 Euro triumph, starting all three knockout games and scoring a brace against the Netherlands in the semi-finals. He received his first call up to the senior team back in March and made his debut earlier this month in a World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein, coming on as a second-half substitute for Joshua Kimmich.
Wirtz has started the new Bundesliga campaign in blistering fashion with four goals and as many assists in five outings, thereby, catching the attention of Manchester City’s title rivals Chelsea, Manchester United, and Liverpool, Christian Falk claims. (h/t Sport Witness)
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola hinted last week that Bernardo Silva could depart in the future despite the playmaker being back to his old best. Silva, 27, tried moving on from the Etihad Stadium in the summer but failed to attract many suitors.
With Ilkay Gundogan already in his 30s and Kevin De Bruyne struggling with injury problems in recent years, Guardiola is right in scouring the market for talented young midfielders. Florian Wirtz, after his eye-catching displays for Leverkusen this term, rightly finds himself on the radar of Manchester City.
The 18-year-old, who has also broken into the German national side, combines his technical skills on the ball with his energy and tenacity to keep things ticking for Leverkusen. At such a tender age, he has already made over 50 appearances for Leverkusen with some of Europe’s elite clubs already vying for his signature.
However, for now, Wirtz is not leaving the Bundesliga club, with his father claiming that he will stay at Bay Arena for the next two years. Keeping that in mind, it remains to be seen how Manchester City act if they’re genuinely interested in one of German football’s prodigious talents.
