Bernardo Silva receives a new lifeline at Manchester City
By Zoheb Alam
Manchester City have recovered from their opening day defeat against Spurs and have now picked up three consecutive wins on the trot. On Saturday, the Citizens were able to pick up all three points at the King Power Stadium as they were able to secure a hard-fought 1-0 win over Leicester City.
Against the Foxes, Bernardo Silva was City’s main protagonist as the midfielder scored the only goal of the game and had also put in an excellent shift in the final third. Most importantly, the Portuguese star has now received three starts in four games and has looked indispensable to manager Pep Guardiola.
This has been a big turnaround for Silva as he was reportedly desperate to leave the club in the summer. But now, the situation at the Etihad has improved for the former AS Monaco man, and this could well be the much-needed spark required to revive his career at the Etihad.
After the win against the Foxes, the midfielder spoke to BBC Match of the Day, where he was spotted talking about his desire to give his best for the club. His words were :
"I love the club, I love my teammates, I love football here. I’m enjoying it and I’m always going to give my best."
In the recently concluded summer window, the Portuguese international clearly indicated that he was open to a move away from Manchester City. Clubs like Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur were reportedly marked as “possible” destinations for the star midfielder but in the end, there was no solid interest from both North London sides.
Currently, the 27-year-old has almost four years left on his contract at the Etihad as his formal agreement is due to expire on June 25, 2022. For Silva, it is still too early to predict whether the player would see out his contract especially if he is again demoted to a bench role by his manager.
As for now, the midfielder would surely be pumped up to face oppositions like PSG, Chelsea, and RB Leipzig this month. The Portuguese star now has an excellent opportunity to impress Guardiola, and would be eager to attain a permanent role in the starting side with more encouraging performances in the City shirt.
