Manchester City got their revenge for their embarrassment earlier this season at the hands of Leicester City, claiming a thorough 2-0 win at the King Power Stadium. City firmly placed their hand on the title following the international break with a key victory over one of their closest rivals in the Foxes. City went 17 points at the top over rivals Man United, although the Red Devils have two games in hand.

More from Game Review

City dominated possession and created a host of chances right from the start, with Fernandinho having a long-range goal ruled out for offside on Sergio Agüero. Leicester had no shots in the first half other than a disallowed Jamie Vardy goal, but the Foxes’ defensive shape frustrated City for much of the game. Kevin De Bruyne hit the bar on an excellent free-kick attempt while Agüero and Riyad Mahrez spurned chances, but City kept pushing forward.

In the end, the breakthrough came from a very unlikely source, as Benjamin Mendy excellently curled the ball into the back of the net on his weaker right foot after a scramble in the box. After the Citizens had established control, Raheem Sterling created an excellent chance off the bench, sliding the ball to Gabriel Jesus for a straightforward tap-in for two.

After the two-week international break changed City’s rhythm, away at Leicester was a very difficult fixture to get back into the swing of club football. However, City were absolutely fantastic and fully deserving winners. Leicester were admittedly not at their best, creating very little on the break after being so devastating the first time these two sides met, but it was yet another great result on City’s road to reclaiming the Premier League title.
