Two late goals from İlkay Gündoğan and Kevin De Bruyne broke the deadlock against Everton to send Manchester City to the FA Cup semifinals. With the result at Goodison Park, City’s dream of achieving the impossible and winning an unprecedented quadruple remained alive.

City were the better side, but the Toffees managed to stifle the visitors for nearly the entire of regular time. Young Portuguese keeper João Virgínia was very impressive, although his opposite number Zack Steffen did well for City as well.

More from Game Review

City were handed a difficult but winnable Champions League quarterfinal opponent in Borussia Dortmund earlier this week before booking their place in the FA Cup semi-finals for the third consecutive season today. City have become regular customers at Wembley Stadium under Pep Guardiola, winning three trophies at the ground during the 2018-19 season before taking home the Carabao Cup a year ago.

The Citizens will be looking for redemption in this cup competition in particular after last season’s shocking semi-final exit at the hands of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. Southampton easily beat Bournemouth earlier in the day, and the Saints and Citizens will be joined by the winners of Chelsea-Sheffield United and Leicester City-Man United. Provided that Chelsea win, Southampton will in all likelihood be the most straightforward path to the final, but City will be favorites against every other side left in the competition.

Staying alive in cup competitions is what will define the rest of City’s season. With the Premier League title all but a formality at this point, surviving, advancing, and winning multiple cups is what will give City a chance at history. The Champions League is absolutely the top priority, but winning back the FA Cup after last season’s disappointment would be incredible, and today was an excellent example of this side’s resolve in the face of adversity.
