It was far from City’s 5-0 thumping of West Bromwich Albion last time out in the league, but an early goal from Gabriel Jesus proved to be the difference. Ferran Torres will deservedly get most of the credit for the goal, showing real effort to stick with a difficult play and slip the ball through the Blades’ defense for a tap-in.
Sheffield created opportunities late on after a lackadaisical second half from the Citizens in which they managed very few chances, but in the end, City got the all-important three points. With an incredibly difficult run of consecutive fixtures on the horizon, the team has taken full advantage of a weak run of fixtures to put themselves in pole position in the title race.
Nevertheless, games against Liverpool, Tottenham, and Man United will go a long way in deciding City’s title credentials. Despite a shaky performance today, the results continued to come in, even if it was against the league’s worst side. The Blades are far better than their points tally would indicate, and put up a great fight despite having essentially been guaranteed relegation.
From a City perspective, however, it’s an important result, and although the performance may not have had the flash of recent weeks, the team got the job done. With potential to drop points on the horizon, City need to carry their momentum into the most crucial stretch of their season.
